Instructor Profile - Eva West

I went to school at Sir William Perkins’s School in Chertsey, and then studied at The Queen’s College, Oxford University where I was the Women’s Captain of the College Boat Club.  After graduating with a degree in Japanese, I joined Accenture, then Andersen Consulting, where I worked until 2007 as a management consultant in their Financial Services division.

I left Accenture in 2007 to look after my three children, and took up Karate soon afterwards to give myself an interest outside the home.  Initially I was concerned that I would be the only adult beginner there, but was reassured to find two equally inexperienced women of my own age.   A few years down the line years later, I am thoroughly enjoying the Karate, and have been joined at Sensei Debi’s club by my two older children and my husband.  The highlight of my karate so far has been participating in the 11th Funakoshi Shotokan Karate World Championships in Sun City, South Africa, where I won three gold medals, mixed adults intermediate team kata, women’s 8th Kyu kata and Women’s 8th and 9th Kyu kumite (fighting).

I think that karate is both immensely enjoyable and beneficial. It not only develops your fitness, but also requires you to focus on your mental stamina and your character.  The focus on discipline, hard work and respect for others is especially valuable for children, who learn these vital skills while having fun and staying active.
I will be assisting with some of the Pee Wee and Funakoshi Shotokan Karate classes.
